Dr Amardeep Singh

With a wealth of machine learning, AI, and data science expertise, Dr Amardeep Singh uses a mentoring approach for ākonga so they gain confidence and take charge of their learning.

He completed his PhD at Massey University, where he specialised in using machine learning and signal processing to optimise EEG-based brain-computer interfaces. Following his PhD, Amardeep worked as a postdoctoral researcher and Research Officer at Massey University, developing AI solutions for network security, including intrusion and malware detection, and advancing explainable AI for cybersecurity applications.

In addition to his academic work, Amardeep has contributed to numerous innovative research projects, from smart home solutions for elderly care to applying deep learning techniques for plant phenotyping. He also completed a Callaghan Career Fellowship at eCOAST, where he developed machine-learning models to simulate ocean wave regimes.

At UCOL, Dr Singh teaches data science, mobile development, and programming courses and shares his unwavering passion for AI. His dedication to exploring AI applications in health data and cybersecurity is a source of inspiration. He also works part-time at the Palmy Health Hub Project, where he is part of a team that developed an AI model to predict patient hospitalisations.

Amardeep was at school in Punjab, India, during the 1990s when computers and the World Wide Web were first introduced and captured his attention. Inspired by The Lord of the Rings, Dr Singh applied to various universities here; “Massey was the first to respond, so here I am.”
