A day in the life of a barber involves helping clients look and feel good by providing personal hair cutting and grooming services.

To make your start with a rewarding career in Barbering, study the UCOL Te Pūkenga New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering Level 4 programme.

You'll gain the skills and knowledge to be a qualified barber who can work independently as a standalone operator in a commercial environment. You will be capable of contributing to barber shop operations offering a range of barbering services to clients.

This qualification is intended for learners who have little or no prior learning or experience in the field.

Practical experience
Regular client days are incorporated into the learning process at one of the UCOL Te Pūkenga Barber Salons in Palmerston North, Whanganui or Masterton, providing you with real industry experience, and honing your professionalism, relationship-building skills and teamwork.

This programme runs for 39 weeks, including 7 holiday weeks.

 Career & Study Outcomes

Successful graduates of the UCOL Te Pūkenga New Zealand Certificate in Commercial Barbering programme will have a range of highly desirable employment skills for the industry, including:

  • Apply underpinning barbering theory and practice to safely and professionally complete barbering cuts and services, and provide client consultation, care and advice as a commercial barber.
  • Communicate with clients, peers, staff and suppliers as a commercial barber, in a culturally appropriate manner.
  • Apply knowledge of health and safety requirements to contribute to commercial barber shop operations.

Employment options include working in an established barbershop and self-employment in own business.

This programme comprises 120 credits. 

Professional Identity (15 Credits)
Examine contemporary and historical influences on the culture of barbering. Describe key roles and responsibilities within the barbering industry. Reflect on the personal attributes required for a qualified barbering role.
This course will cover:
Contemporary influences, Historical influences, Styles and trends, Suburban and high-end barbershops, Shop culture
Communication skills, Personal presentation, Personal health and wellbeing, Hairstyles and self-styling, Cultural awareness, Health and safety
Reflective practice, Personal attributes, Physical and mental health and wellbeing

Industry Practice (15 Credits)
Use systems to complete client bookings and payments for the barbering context.
Discuss policy and practices within the barbering industry.
Explain sustainable practices within the barbering industry.
This course will cover:
Digital and non-digital booking systems, Payment systems, Money, Numeracy skills
Health and safety, Upselling, Personal and barbershop marketing and promotion, Manage stock and consumables, Code of ethics and professional standard.
Professional communication; Peers, Industry partners, Professional identity
Contribute to daily routines: General housekeeping, preparation, and maintenance throughout the day, Front of house policies and practices, Client management
Three pillars of sustainability; Sustainability practices within a barbershop

Barbering Skills (15 Credits)
Perform a basic consultation, including hair and scalp analysis, to barbering industry standard.
Demonstrate introductory cutting and finishing skills to create a range of haircuts to barbering industry standard.
Recommend products for clients in the barbering context.
This course will cover:
Client communication, Conversation skills, Appropriate greetings and farewells, Cultural awareness, Other considerations; Gender, Personalities, Age
Introduction to hair, scalp and skin conditions and recommended treatments
Tools of the trade, Foundation haircutting; Introductory cutting skills, Forms, sectioning, shapes, projection
Finishing skills; Blow drying techniques, Use of tools for blow-drying, finishing
Shampoo and conditioning products, Styling, finishing products, Treatment advice – scalp conditions, hair loss.

Barbering Influences (15 Credits)
Describe hair and facial hairstyles with reference to cultural practices and fashion trends relevant to the barbering industry. 1 LO2 Cut and/or style hair and facial hair considering cultural and historical influences in the barbering industry
This course will cover:
Influences, social and economic status, and associated roles of the trade, Culture styles, Religion, Timelines, Trends
Cutting skills, Finishing skills, Beard and moustache shaping

Facial Grooming (15 Credits)
Explain the history of wet shaving in the barbering industry. Describe facial products, techniques, and preparation for facial grooming in the barbering industry. Demonstrate technique with a straight razor to complete a full-face shave to barbering industry standard.
This course will cover:
Definition of wet shave
Evolution of wet shaving; Products, tools, health and safety, technological advancement
Physiology of the skin, hair, and facial bones, types of products, skin types – normal, oily, dry, elasticity, hair growth, and recommended treatments
Shaving techniques with a straight razor

Cut and Finish (15 Credits)
Apply techniques to produce professional cuts for the barbering context. Demonstrate finishing techniques to a professional standard for the barbering context.
This course will cover:
Haircut techniques and styles, Nape shaping & lineouts, Tapering and blending, Clipper techniques, Scissor techniques, Razor techniques
Drying techniques, Product application 

The Barber's Chair (15 Credits)
Discuss strategies to engage with a diverse range of clients in the barbering context.  Demonstrate professional behaviour and skills during the client's journey in the barbering context.
This course will cover:
Diverse clients, Communication, Problem-solving
In-depth consultation and analysis, Hair and scalp analysis and proposed service, Use of tools and equipment, Working safely, Relating to others, communication skills,  Barbering/Hairdressing Health Regulations Act 1980

Grande Finale (15 Credits)
Design a collection of styles in response to a theme in the barbering context. Present a collection of styles to a professional standard in the barbering context Summarise the barbering design and creation journey for an audience.
This course will cover:
Design process, Themes, Visual planning
Technical skills, Dressing and finishing techniques, Presentation skills, Organisation and time management
Summarising, Reflection, Evaluation, Communication

 Domestic Entry Requirements

To be admitted to this programme applicants must meet the following requirements:

 40 credits at NCEA Level 1, including 10 Literacy credits and 10 Numeracy credits

OR

 a relevant qualification at NZQF Level 2 or above

OR

a recognised equivalent

20 years of age or older and has not reached the general admission requirements is eligible for Special Admission.

English language proficiency

All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.

 International Entry Requirements

International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 (general or academic) with no individual band lower than 5 from one test taken in the preceding two years, or an equivalent.

English language proficiency

All applicants (international and domestic) for whom English or te reo Māori is not a first language need to provide evidence that they have the necessary English language proficiency required for the programme.

Under 20 years of age
In addition to this, international applicants under 20 years of age must have NCEA equivalency.

 Advice & Guidance

Excellent personal presentation is required on this programme at all times. A UCOL uniform top is provided for learners and this must be worn for all practical classes and client days.

Learners need to be aware of the physical requirements in meeting industry standards in the barbering workplace.

Learners are required to put any special needs or requirements in writing and advise the Academic Portfolio Manager prior to the programme start date.

Work-integrated experience

As part of your studies you'll be involved in running the Barber space at UCOL Te Pūkenga and performing barbering services for the public under the support of your lecturer.

You'll be required to wear a uniform top (supplied by UCOL Te Pūkenga) and comply with UCOL and industry standards of personal presentation.

Recognition of prior learning
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a learner believes all learning outcomes for a course have already been met. Applications will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the UCOL Te Pūkenga Academic Statute and other relevant policies and procedures.

  • National Student Number (NSN) (If you don't have a NSN, you may request one from NZQA, or you can supply a verified copy of your birth certificate, passport or Whakapapa statement.)

  • Evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme
