Before enrolling at UCOL Lux Adams, of Ngāti Tama Whiti (Tūwharetoa) descent, knew he needed to regain academic confidence.
As an adult with no school certificate qualifications, and looking to further his skills and create employment opportunities, Lux enrolled in the NZ Diploma in Business at Whanganui UCOL.
After discussing his studies with Whanganui UCOL Kaiāwhina Support and Business Lecturers, Lux says he felt comfortable and supported to succeed in his educational journey. "I was comfortable approaching any staff member for advice."
Lux found learning with like-minded people encouraged him to interact in the course and build self-confidence. "Learning alongside people who share very similar interests but also have different views really broadened my thinking," he says.
Lux not only wanted to graduate with a degree but was also keen to inspire others. "If I can do it – anyone can do it!"
He says completing his degree has created avenues for his family to give study a go, and craft different pathways for the next generation. "I credit Whanganui UCOL and their staff for giving me the belief to make something of my life."
Having completed the NZ Diploma in Business Lux is now working in a Facilitator role at UCOL, in which he guides students in free computing courses through a range of computer skills and encourages self-direct learning.
"I try to make the classroom environment more homely and family orientated to create a team culture where we all help each other learn."
Lux continues to upskill with the Open Polytechnic, saying that the skills he learnt at UCOL have helped him in more ways than one.
"The computing skills that I picked up as part of my UCOL qualification have helped immensely with my teaching, as well as improving my communication skills. This has led me to move on to a Business Management degree, which I will complete at the end of 2016. What a journey!"
