Joanne Hood enrolled in UCOL’s Free and Easy computer training course to put her on the right track for future study.
Having worked as a Caregiver at Riverside Lodge rest home in Foxton Beach for over a decade, in 2015 Joanne realised she was inspired by the Registered Nurses she worked with.
She says she decided to explore her study options after being involved with the Nurses and their work at the rest home. "Actually, it was my colleagues who suggested that I should look into studying Nursing, as they thought I might be good at it."
UCOL's staff in Palmerston North suggested it would be valuable for Joanne to begin her study journey with a Free and Easy computer course and then move on to further study.
"I'm so glad I did," she says. "The Free and Easy computer course has been a huge help to me. I didn't know much at all about computers beforehand."
Joanne says she felt well supported by UCOL during her study. "I have some challenges with learning but I have found the staff really do want you to pass and do well."
She says the best part about studying at UCOL was the liveliness of the campus. "It was great meeting other students and awesome UCOL lecturers."
Since graduating from the Free and Easy course, Joanne has moved on to UCOL's Certificate in Science and Health and says her new computer skills and have come in very handy. "The depth we went into in the Free and Easy course was very beneficial to prepare me for full time study. I now have the confidence to use basic computer software well."
Set to graduate in 2016, Joanne's next step is enrolling in a UCOL Nursing programme.
"My ultimate goal is to work as a Registered Nurse in a hospital or rest home."
