The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) will provide students with the language skills needed to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in everyday/social/community, workplace and/or academic English language contexts.

This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2.

 Career & Study Outcomes

Successful graduates of UCOL's New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) can progress to further study at undergraduate level.

 Domestic Entry Requirements

The Academic Requirement for entry into the New Zealand Certificate in English Language, Level 4 is the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) or equivalent skills. A diagnostic test to identify the Level at which the student should begin studying may be used.

 International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, international student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (or equivalent including TOEFL) score of 5. UCOL is a TOEFL iBT testing centre. The English Proficiency test is accepted for English language entry into all UCOL programmes.

 Advice & Guidance

All students are encouraged to access support and guidance to improve study, research and academic skills. 

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language, Level 4 comprises 60 credits.

This course is free of charge for New Zealand domestic students and refugees.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course or unit standards have already been met.

It will make the process easier if you prepare evidence that you meet the entry requirements of the programme before you apply. Note that you will need to provide any verified documents in person, via post or email.

 Accreditation

The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Trading as Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is accredited to teach it.
