The New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) will provide students with the language skills needed to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some less familiar situations with fluency and flexibility in everyday/social/community, workplace and/or academic English language contexts.

This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) B2.

Career & Study Outcomes

Successful graduates of UCOL's New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 4) can progress to further study at undergraduate level.

Domestic Entry Requirements

The Academic Requirement for entry into the New Zealand Certificate in English Language, Level 4 is the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3) or equivalent skills. A diagnostic test to identify the Level at which the student should begin studying may be used.

International Entry Requirements

English Proficiency Entry Requirements:
International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (or equivalent including TOEFL) score of 5. UCOL is a TOEFL iBT testing centre. The English Proficiency test is accepted for English language entry into all UCOL programmes.

All students are encouraged to access support and guidance to improve study, research and academic skills. 

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language, Level 4 comprises 60 credits.

Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning, including Cross Credit, Credit Transfer and Assessment of Prior Learning may be made on the Recognition of Prior Learning Form where a student believes all learning outcomes for a course or unit standards have already been met.
