The sport and exercise science field is wide open, with exciting careers available to skilled and motivated people. Whilst studying this certificate you’ll be introduced to the effects of exercise on the body, and how to write a training programme, along with aspects of sport coaching, the fitness industry, event management and the application of sport medicine and injury management.

All of this is done in UCOL’s fully equipped gym and exercise physiology testing laboratories, in addition to placements within the industry. This is a hands-on, practical programme where you will benefit from the industry experience and knowledge of the UCOL lecturers.

NCEA Level 2 (including Literacy 10 credits at Level 2 and 10 Numeracy credits at Level 1)

Because students may be working in schools, all applicants are required to authorise UCOL to obtain a background check from the New Zealand Police Licensing and Vetting Agency. Convictions of any offence may not necessarily exclude applicants from enrolment; the decision is at the discretion of the Programme Leader.

International Entry Requirements

In addition to the Domestic Entry Requirements, the following applies to international student applicants:

English Proficiency Entry Requirements
International student applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS (or equivalent including TOEFL) score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5. UCOL is a TOEFL iBT testing centre. The English Proficiency test is accepted for English language entry into all UCOL programmes.
Under 20 years of age
For international applicants under 20 years of age who do not hold NCEA, International Academic Qualifications Entry Criteria apply.

Advice & Guidance

UCOL's Certificate in Exercise and Sport Performance comprises 120 credits.

Additional Costs

Please note that there are additional costs associated with the Certificate in Exercise and Sport Performance:

Required Items
To be paid for by the end of the first week of the programme - $570.00 at the Information Centre. Please advise them of Account 157675, Code 2860). You'll receive a receipt. Please take this to Jill Jonasen in 6-1-11 as evidence you have paid.
  • Two UCOL training tops $70.00
  • Event fee - as part of Exercise Prescription Fitness you will complete a training programme and a number of fitness events. This will require entry fees and transport costs. $200.00
  • Heart rate monitor - PolarM400. You will need to bring this equipment to fitness classes and training sessions throughout the year. UCOL will arrange purchase of this device for you. $300.00
Optional Items
  • Additional training gear such as running shoes, cold weather training clothing and shorts. Approximately $300.00

If you receive a loan from Study Link of $1,000.00 for course related costs, note that this is a loan and is repayable with your student loan.
