 Course Information

Self - Aho (15 Credits)
Understand self-management strategies to organise personal life, maintain well-being and continue learning. Reflect on progress towards achieving personal and career goals. Organise, interpret, and communicate information using basic literacy and numeracy skills in relevant contexts.

Communication - Whakamo (15 Credits)
Develop basic communication skills to interact positively with a variety of people and learn about cultural diversity.

Project - Mahi (15 Credits)
Learn to reflect and to develop contextualised skills to participate effectively in achieving personal and career goals.

Research - Rapunga Korero (15 Credits)
Gain introductory research skills, and the literacy and numeracy skills required for future study or for entry-level employment.

The New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 is suitable for people who have no formal qualifications and who need to improve their literacy and numeracy skills. It is designed for those seeking to achieve NCEA Level 1 and/or gain literacy and numeracy credits.

Previous Related Programmes

The New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 1 supersedes and takes the best from the following programmes of study, which are no longer offered:
  • Tertiary Study Skills Level 1
  • Certificate in Fashion and Beauty


The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under the provisions of the Education Act 1989, and Universal College of Learning (UCOL) Trading as Universal College of Learning (UCOL) is accredited to teach it.
