Matariki Celebrations at UCOL Manawatū

Celebrate Matariki, the Māori New Year, with us.

To celebrate Matariki, we'll be holding activities all week, including a Matariki Market on Wednesday 26 June. 

Any students wanting to book a table for themselves or their whānau at the Matariki Market, please contact Reggie Boult at R.boult@ucol.ac.nz.


Monday 24 June
Kapahaka performance to open the weeks celebrations.
12pm, UCOL Manawatū Atrium

Shared kai. Bring a plate of kai.

Tuesday 25 June
Fry bread workshop. Learn how to prepare, roll and cook fry bread.
12pm, UCOL Manawatū Atrium


Wednesday 26 June
Matariki Market. Business, organisation & food stalls for you to check out. 
10am-1pm, UCOL Manawatū Atrium

Hangi. Pre-sale of tickets to be released soon. Keep an eye out.
11am & 12pm

Matariki Presentation. Professor Hone Morris from Massey University will be speaking in depth about the significance of Matariki.
12pm, Whānau Room

Cosmodome. Te Manawa will be bringing their interactive cosmodome to UCOL. Learn more about the stars. 
9.30am-4pm, Block 10 Atrium


Thursday 27 June
Matariki Waiata. Come and learn a new waiata (song) about Matariki.
12pm, Whānau Room

Māori Movement. UCOL Excercise and Sports Science Lecturer Janelle Kiriona will be teaching and demonstrating Māori movement, fitness of the gods.
12pm, UCOL Manawatū Atrium


Friday 28 June
Student Garden. Come and participate in the planting of a herb garden. It's a new year and a new start.
